This is another quick experiment I just finished. I’ve been working with CMYK embroidery for ~4 years, but haven’t quite tried the simplest thing: a realistic image that is hand-printed. Does the handmade colour separation actually work, would it be recognizable at all? I wanted to try a portrait but it did not seem right to manipulate someone else’s image. So here is a simple Photo Booth self-portrait in CMYK cross-stitch, a printed image that is hand made. Below you can also see how it was done, stitching in progress layer by layer. I began with Cyan but decided to swap Yellow and Magenta. Thread is not transparent, and it was important to stitch Magenta and Black as top layers as these colours define image details.
